A book that points out this trend in the selling of videos, music and books is "The Long Tail - Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More," by Chris Anderson. One offers books for limited time periods and then takes it away when the time is up. Another checks out the e-reader in the same way it checks out books. I believe the role of the library will change, but as long as librarians stay abreast of current trends - and the ones I know do so - I think the future of libraries is secure.Jeaniehttp://2manybooks2littletime.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5410373290265879019.post-21375894265840251902010-05-06T16:01:53.291-04:002010-05-06T16:01:53.291-04:00Ape, I thought your analysis was spot-on, and incr...Ape, I thought your analysis was spot-on, and incredibly well-done - so well-done, in fact, that I linked to your post from my blog today. As long as people who write get paid so that they still write stuff I want to read, what does it cost me really?

@Brent and Emily- Thanks!

@Clint- But won't libraries have to manage digital copies somehow? It doesn't seem like they could supply an unlimited number of copies to borrowers---that would screw things up royally.the Apehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14060965283007759623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5410373290265879019.post-50539299263849607662010-05-04T18:15:01.228-04:002010-05-04T18:15:01.228-04:00If technology brings more readers, then I agree th...If technology brings more readers, then I agree that it should be embraced. Personally, I don't anticipate buying any electronic reading platform in the near future - I prefer the library. However, I anticipate electronic books will be a disrupter for the public library at some point. The prospect of no more past due fees and or more waiting 3 months in the hold queue is attractive.Clintonhttp://twitter.com/clintonknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5410373290265879019.post-59087169746776519302010-05-04T05:49:49.167-04:002010-05-04T05:49:49.167-04:00Great, great article. You've done a great job in your analysis. With all the fear about electronic books, many seem to have lost the forest for the trees (of which we'll have many more, thanks to electronic media). More readers is a good thing, and e-books are currently bringing along new readers. Five years from now we'll be looking at entirely different electronic platforms - this is an exciting transitional era for readers!Jeaniehttp://2manybooks2littletime.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
